Bajaj Vespa Scooters
Bajaj Chetok questions.. Opinions?
I was originally looking for an old vespa and saw the Chetok. Does this scooter (new ones) have the manual transmission like the old vespas? What is your opinion? Are you happy with yours if you bought one?
Yes, manual transmission, four speed. Very easy to operate, though. While the Chetak does not have quite the style of a true vintage vespa, it is essentially a p series vespa body. In other words, throw some chrome on it, dress it up, and many folks won't know the difference as you cruise by getting up to 90 mpg. The bajaj is a four stroke motor, which means no premixing of oil, just straight 87 octane gas. There is very little you can do performance wise, so you are pretty much limited to a top speed of about 60mph. That having been said, they are very reliable, and will do that 60mph all day long with no fear of heat siezure as on a 2 stroke. There is a bajaj specific discussion group on yahoo, that's probably your best source of info. There are certain issues that were rectified later on in production, among them being an improved charging system (keeps battery charged, resulting in brighter lights, etc.) and an updated clutch basket/rear hub assembly. If you go test ride one of these bikes, look for any play/wobble in the back tire. Also, when starting out in first gear, if there is a hesitation followed by a clunk, there could be some issues. Some people say they all do that, others say that means you need to open the motor and replace the hub, etc. Mine does it, has always done it, and continues to just rack up the miles. Last, check the web site for argo usa, a canadian company that purchased the remainder of bajaj inventory. You did know they are no longer being produced, right? It does seem like they have plenty of spare parts, but just a heads up. Also, Pride of Cleveland scooters in ohio is a good source of info, particularly Phil, the owner. I hope this helps.
