2nd Hand Vespa Scooters

Vespa write off, worried about insurance offer?

My 17 year old son was knocked off his Vespa two days ago, its a write off but fortunately he only sustained minor injuries. The guy driving the van has admitted to us and the police that it was 100% his fault. Now in the hands of the insurers but I am worried that they will offer him a lousy amount of money, the scooter was only 2 months old so obviously he wants to replace it with another brand new one. Any advice or things to look out for, what to expect etc and are we going to have a fight on our hands?

The Scooter - The insurance company are more than likely to offer "book value" (let me know what model it is and I will get you the book price). Dealers have nothing to do with valuing the bike apart from the initial inspection (yes, dealers do make a profit, but insurance companies get a lower rate for labour and are notoriously slow at paying the bill, after all, you would not work for free either!) the inspection can then be overseen by the insurance company's assesor. Once they have an estimate to fix, the insurance company will decide to go ahead and fix, or replace (at book). You will I am sure, lose the VAT, but should get an offer for any accessories if covered on the policy.

The Clothing - Go and get an estimate for replacement jacket, helmet etc. This should be "old" for "new"

Injuries - No matter how small should be noted, have you got legal cover with the policy?, if not contact a reputable "bike" specialist solicitor with a no win, no fee basis (see MCN or ask your mates etc)

Finally, just because the driver admitted to you and the police doesn't mean that you are home and dry, try to get a police report stating the circumstances of the accident and that the other party was 100% to blame, as sure as eggs are eggs the other insurance company will try to squirm out of its responsibilities (they did with me and it took 7 years for them to do the right thing!)

I know I've gone on a bit, but this is not as easy as it first appears and often the injured party loses out, so get ready and fight where you need to.

where to buy a 2nd hand lambretta or vespa in Malaysia?

I want to buy a vespa or lambretta to get around town with, and to begin collecting these type of scooters?
Can anyone tell me where in Malaysia to get the best deals - i was initially thinking of looking in Terranganu or Malaka, but can't find much on the internet.

Be careful...most vintage or "restored" bikes you purchase in Eastern Asian countries are extremely dangerous (and affectionately called "Viet-Bodges" for obvious reasons). You really need to go over the bike visually to make sure that it wasn't slapped together with parts that don't even go to the type of bike it is...I've seen bikes that have twisted in half from the frame or cracked in two all together from shoddy welding jobs. Not to mention all the money you'll dump into it replacing substandard reproduction parts. A quick indication is clear boots on the kickstand....run the other way if you see this!! Don't waste your money on something very dangerous.
