Can anyone give me their impressions on a 1981 KZ440?

I'm poised to get this Kawasaki with about 24K miles on it (belt driven)...everything works but I have no personal experience with these bikes. Any thoughts on it would be helpful! I'm stepping up from scoots to this, so I have about 6 years riding experience, but nothing on a fully manual bike (aside from a vintage Vespa that topped out at 50mph).

Also, if you have any recommended forums, I'd love to hear about them as well! I've seen a few through a routine search, but would love to be targeted about them...thanks!

All the "big 4" Jap manufactors made their own version of the 400cc machine back in the late 70's to early 80's. These morphed into 450cc and then eventually into 500cc machines. The KZ440 is an early model of the EN454 LTD model. The engines are bullet proof, the carbs are adequate. The belt drive just means you do not have a chain to lube, and is 1 step short of a shaft drive-the best drive system for cruiser style bikes in my humble opinion. The belt will require periodic checking for stretching and retightening, but nothing other than that.

Top speed on the 440 is around 100 mph (eventually). It may take a while to get up to that, but since no place in the US has speeds posted above 75mph it is more than adequate for what ever is asked of it. They are small, medium weight bikes that with bare minimum maintenance-oil changes every 2500-3000 miles, steering stem bearing repacks about every 25,000 miles and periodic coolant system flushes will last indefinately.

Perhaps they were made too well as there are still thousands and thousands of em out on the roads.
