Electric Scooter Vespa
Are you paying for the name when you buy a Vespa or are they worth the extra $? Any other scooters better?
I want a scooter with enough power to go up to 35 mph. Are electric scooters worth a look?
The Vespa vs. other scooters debate is a pretty hot one. I own both a Vespa and a Genuine scooter (made by PGO in Taiwan). In some ways, comparing Vespas to other scooters is like comparing a Mercedes to a Toyota: It may not be faster or get more MPGs but there's definitely a difference in build quality, detailing and fit and finish. A lot of owners of other scooters will bash Vespas as being all about style or looks, but that makes about as much sense as the Toyota owner saying the same about a Mercedes owner. Vespas do have some performance advantages as well—I think their metal bodies make for a more well-balanced, smooth ride. They also perform and handle better at high speeds than some comparable scooters.
Those metal bodies are both a plus and a minus. They're very expensive to repair any body damage, but they will survive crashes that would total most plastic-bodied scooters. Also, painted metal just looks better.
For enough power to get to 35mph, you don't need more than a 50cc scooter. I'd suggest having a look at Honda, Yamaha, Kymco, Genuine and SYM as well as the Piaggios and Aprilias (which are made by Vespa's parent company but are less expensive). These are all quality brands and a lot of which is "best" will come down to personal preference, availability, and dealers in your area.
Electric scooters still have a way to go before they compete with gas ones in terms of price and performance. There's also a lot of cheap, mainland Chinese-made electric and gas scooters out there. I'd recommend avoiding them. (Not all Chinese scooters are horrible, but most are. That's a whole 'nother topic.)
For what it's worth, Genuine is introducing a "green Buddy," a 125cc tuned to get maximum fuel economy but which performs somewhere between a 50cc and their stock 125s. Vespa has hybrids coming next year, but I expect they'll be quite pricey. They're also introducing some new 50cc models for '09.
Keep in mind that a lot of people who buy 50cc scooters thinking they'll only need or want to ride at lower speeds quickly decide to trade up for something bigger once they get hooked. They find they want to ride to more places and further out. Also, unmodified 50cc scooters generally max out at 45mph—that's totally pushing it, wide open throttle. You still want enough power to keep up with traffic and avoid obstacles and bad drivers.
All that said, I know plenty of people who like their 50cc scoots. Depending on your state, they do have some advantages: you may not need insurance, you may not need a full motorcycle license, registration may be different (50s don;t need plates in some states) and in many places you can park a 50cc scooter on a sidewalk or bike rack.

What is the best electric moped/scooter to get around town?
What product should i be looking into if i wish to spend around $200-$500 dollars? I want to get a vespa but i am afraid they are just way to expensive.New or used is fine with me! I am sixteen and just got my lisence and i dont want to pay these insane gas prices. Any ideas would be helpful!
