Classic Vespa Style Scooter

Recommendations for a high speed commuter scooter?

I'm looking for a scooter for my wife. We need one that go up to 85 mph for interstate driving but looks more classic (vespa styling) than something like a Ruckus or Morpheous. Any suggestions? Thank you!

You have several options for a fun, high-speed scooter. If you want something more classically styled but capable of highway speeds, you should check out the Vespa GTS 250. While it is smaller than some of the "maxi-scooters" it can easily achieve 80mph. I have a few friends that recently rode some GTSs from California to Seattle with no problems. The GTS has a 31" seat height, which may be a little high for a shorter-legged rider.

Piaggio's BV500 was fun to ride and I liked the large tires. It may be modern looking, but has it's own look that is unique. The front looks like an upside down necktie. My only complaint was that the under seat storage was oddly shaped.

I rode a Suzuki Burgman 400 from San Francisco to Sonoma, CA and had a great time with it on the freeway and on the curvy Napa roads. I prefer it to the 650 (which I have also ridden). Both are large bikes and I'm glad that I had over 10 years of scooting experience, so that I could handle the weight of the bikes (438 lbs. for the 400 and 535 lbs. for the 650). The Burgman 400 has been redesigned with a 28" seat, which is comfortable for most. It also has lots of bells & whistles which are great for long-distance touring.

The Kymco People series is very popular and looks less "buggy" than some other new bikes. The People S 250 has a 29.5" seat . I rode one from San Francisco to San Jose (about 50 miles) on the freeway and had no problems.

The Honda Silverwing was a bit too heavy for me (501 lbs) but has lots of features, including optional ABS brakes. I preferred the Honda Reflex (but in the sport package) and rode it from LA to San Jose in 2004. It handled the task well and only has a 28" seat height.

As an aside, Honda no longer makes the Ruckus in a 250, and the Morphous has hardly any storage for it's size. I also don't recommend the Kymco Grand Vista as its seat it too close to the handlebars and is really suited for petite people. Most people that I know who have ridden it echo that complaint.
