What is the cheapest vehicle for great gas mileage available? I don't want a motorcycle or a scooter. Ideas?

My husband and I have an SUV and an Diesel truck. He needs a cheaper way to get to work with the gas costs. Car pooling doesn't work due to his schedule. He tried riding his bike buy it is 15 miles on way in heavy traffic with bad roads. And he can't get another job due to his field. What can you share with a cheap car to get. It would be most definately a used car with great gas mileage that requires very little maintence. The point is to not spend much money.

By the way we have to keep the truck, it is paid off and we have a boat and ATV's . Also the SUV is paid off to.
